A conversation on what’s top of mind for treasurers now with NeuGroup founder and CEO Joseph Neu.

The second half of NeuGroup’s 2025 meeting cycle started rocking and rolling last week. So to set the stage for a fresh wave of peer insights, I offer the pilot episode of What’s Neu (that’s pronounced “noy”) to explore some of the defining themes for treasury teams so far as we hurdle toward the end of another year.
To help unpack it, I sat down with NeuGroup founder and CEO Joseph Neu for a wide-ranging conversation that spans geopolitical unpredictability, the evolution of AI in treasury and why self-built solutions may hold the key to real innovation in finance.
“If you’re in uncertain times and you’re not sure what to do and there’s a feeling that there’s things beyond your control, you tend to turn to things that you can control,” Joseph tells me. For many treasury teams, that means turning inward—improving workflows, building out data structures and implementing automation.
Joseph also reflects on a theme that’s quietly emerged across member meetings: finance teams are building their own tools—often powered by Python or AI code assistants (nicknamed “vibe coding” tools due to their accessibility to non-coders). That means companies are investing in governance: centers of excellence and new ways to scale safe experimentation.
The conversation also explores treasury’s expanding role as a strategic finance function and business partner within the enterprise—a topic that surfaced across several NeuGroup meetings in the first half. “Finance takes on a mandate to empower the business to earn more revenue and more profit and ultimately to generate more cash flow,” he says.
We wrap on a different kind of note, with Joseph sharing a recent musical rediscovery from digging into the archives of a legendary American songwriter. Extra credit for correct guesses.
The What’s Neu video series is designed to be something different: unscripted, lightly produced and focused on genuine conversations—including what’s going on behind the scenes at NeuGroup. You can watch the full 10-minute conversation by hitting the play button below:
